PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III recently appointed retired Supreme Court (SC) Justice Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez to complete the seven-man Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), the multi-sectoral body which vets nominees to the judiciary, Office of the Ombudsman and its deputies.
Gutierrez will represent the retired SC justices in the JBC for four years, according to the transmittal letter sent by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. to Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on August 26.
Prior to her appointment, Gutierrez was tapped by the high court to investigate Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Gregory Ong for his alleged shady deals with suspected pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Napoles.
Gutierrez reportedly recommended Ong's dismissal from the judiciary but the SC has yet to decide on the anti-graft court magistrate's fate.
Gutierrez is currently the Dean of the Graduate School of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Board Chairperson of Aliw Broadcasting Corporation which runs radio station dwIZ and Board Director at San Miguel Corporation.
She served in the SC from 2000 to 2008.
Apart from Gutierrez, the other members of the JBC chaired by Sereno are Justice Secretary Leila de Lima (Executive department), Senator Aquilino Pimentel III or Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. (Congress), retired Court of Appeals Justice Aurora Lagman (private sector), Jose Mejia (academe) and Milagros Fernan-Cayosa (Integrated Bar of the Philippines).
